Re: Exhaust outlet
I have mine dumping behind the back wheels and I don't get fumes in the back. On a cold morning it looks fantastic as well.

Re: Exhaust outlet
my first van had them dumping behind the wheels but i got fumes in.... i think it may have had something to do with the rust around that area hehehehe, but from what i've seen and heard, no you don't get fumes in. if you did, you wouldn't see it alot. and yep, i think it does look better dumping out behind the wheels rather than out the back..... oh watch out beigy, i'm not finished with you yet.

Re: Exhaust outlet
There is a bloke up this way who has this but i haven't spoken to him much yet.
When i do i'll find out.
It'll probably be like sidepipes i'd imagine.

Re: Exhaust outlet
I have tried several combinations on my van for the exhausts to come out and here are the results:
1st- Typical Sandman Style 2" pointing straight out underneath the bumpettes (like Stormbringer...Grandpa style! lol sorry stu) Lots of fumes with tailgate open!
2nd- Chevy Dumper- 2 1/2" behind the rear wheels. Sounds awesome. No fumes while standing still but plenty when driving (tailgate up).
3rd- 3" stuck out infront of the rear wheels. Wild Sound!!! (turn up fuel mixture and do a 4th to 2nd change and watch the flames spit out like a touring car) No Fumes while driving Tailgate up but crap clearance to get anywhere because of the mufflers under the floorpan- great in winter "Floorpan Heating".
4th- 3" out the back angled down slightly, lined up the inside of the bumpettes- centralised more. Sounds good, fumes while tailgate open but no problems with tailgate shut.

Re: Exhaust outlet
Not unless you do it like Daz has done.
Mount the muffler where they usually are loop the exhaust back and put it in front of the wheels,(I thought of this one as well) and have oval tips like the commodores, to give it the V8 supercar look.

Re: Exhaust outlet
i never had fumes come in any of my vans, tho i ran side pipes on everyone of them. maybe thats the trick..
Re: Exhaust outlet
Hey guys, I use to own a HQ van in the 70's way back when. After reading this topic I can't believe how simple things can baffle so called car enthusiasts. If your van leaks exhaust fumes into the passenger compartment, simply buy some decent window and weather seals, also adjust your door gaps while your going. It also doesn't hurt to climb under your old rusty bomb and plug up any holes leading inside. It's that simple and guess what......it works.

what's to say his tailgate was closed or have you just assumed this?
being a so-called vanner from the 70's,you would know that they used to drive everywhere with the tailgates open and this was a problem back then as well

Re: Exhaust outlet
I ended up putting it out the back.
As the missus mentioned to me, as there will be kids in the back (if they were dumped) the noise may be too much for the kids on a trip.
BUT tanks for the tips anyway (get it tips - exhaust tips. )
