Re: What have I stumbled onto! Decode the codes
G'day John
From what I have found on the sandman owners site is.
Model=panelvan
Body=Serial number
Trim=Colour ?
Paint=Colour ?
Eng=High compression 253, Four speed man floor, dif/axle 3.55:1
Eng=Engine Number
8=GMH,M=Commercial,70=Panelvan,R=4.2L,G=1977,L3=Adelaide,70262=Serial No,X=HX
I hope I have not stuffed up any of that.
Later.

Re: What have I stumbled onto! Decode the codes
I am no expert but here is what I know:
Model HX8W M 70 - HX (HX) Holden (, commercial (not Kingswood) (M), Panel van (70)
BODY 221 556 -A
TRIM 2214-18V - Slate Black vinyl (Good Sandman sign)
PAINT 568-15991 - Tuxedo Black paint (desirable)
ENG L32 TRANS M20 REAR AXEL GV7 - 253 engine (L32), Four speed floor shift manual (M20) fitted to 6 cylinders and 253 V8s (M21 fitted to 308s), 3.55:1 diff ratio (GV7)
ENG No QR823701
8M70 RGL 370 262X - Holden (, Commercial (M), (would be 80 for ute), 253 High compression engine (R), 1977 model (G), Adelaide built (L3), Van (70), serial number (262), HX model (X)
I would say this is a Sandman. To be a Sandman seating capacity should be 2 and the tyre placard number in the glove box should be 9942827, 9942991or 9942992 and the GVW should be 1950kg I think.
Run the numbers through Warren at holden@monaroparts.com he has a register of heaps of sandmans and will probably have the plates on file.
I stand to be corrected on any of the above info.
Ian

the smiles should be 8
PS don't expect to see XX7 on the plates as that is only for Brisbane built Sandmans
