Van History Empty Van History

Post by DB001 9/5/2009, 9:11 am

Hi all.
Just found the forum and rgistered straight away.
I was wondering if any one has any recollection of a couple of vans from the eighties?
They were called 'Shady Lady" and Mellow Yellow"
I am considering starting a van project and these vans have stuck in my head for years.
As a young guy i bought all the Van Wheels Mags and i know these two were pictured in a couple of issues.
I went on to buy a tidy HQ van which was my pride and joy and by the time i sold it (to get married!) it was looking pretty good.
I have owned and built some nice cars over the ensuing 30 years and have just about finished my latest (67 mustang coupe).
I have plenty of room in the shed however and have been feeling a bit nostalgic about these old vans of late!
Any pics or comments would be appreciated.
Cheers
Doug

Thanks 065
From memory, both vans were HJ/X/Z? with statesman fronts and both were chrome yellow with really cool (or at least i thought so at the time!) murals.
I have a feeling that they were SA vans as I was living in Adelaide at the time and had seen them both on the street.
Once i get the muzzy finished (coupla months) i will be looking for something to tinker with and it is either a big block 66 fairlane hardtop or a Holden Pano!
My daugter is pestering me to build her a car and there is no way she is getting behind the wheel of a big block muscle car so the van is looking good.
I found the mustang forum an invaliable source of info and assistance during the rebuild of the 67 so if I end up going down the van route, you will no doubt be sick of answering dumb questions from me!!
Cheer
Doug

Thanks for that Agro (and Flash Harry)!
Well ther she was!!
The yellow Shady Lady with the SA plates and statesman grill.
It funny but my first reaction was dissapointment!
The picture that i had in my memory was of a gound breaking van with radical paint.
When you compare that van to some of the great builds that you see around it looked fairly plain.
Then i started thinking back to those days (i was about 15 at the time she was driving around).
That van made a huge impression on me because, at the time it was the top of the tree.
You just didnt see airbrushed murals on street driven vans at that time.
It was one of the really early builds and it WAS ground breaking.
The van seen exploded after that and the quality of builds and new ideas just kept getting better and better.
One down, one to go!!
Mellow Yellow is out there somewhere, i am sure.
The bug is biting and i am now on the look out for a HJ-WB windowless van shell or runner with no rust to purchase.
(yeah, i know. Me and plenty of others!)
If any one knows of any thing around, drop me a post.
Cheers
Doug

thanks heaps for that Agro.... now i just need to spend each lunchtime browsing the sites you've posted, oh bugger lunchtime, i'll just spend work time too.... I luv the first shady lady, that to me is a van from '70s, really like the look of that.... hmm wonder if beigy can change to a girl instead of being a boy.... need to get out the scalpel... errr angle grinder Very Happy Very Happy

...and DB... there were quite a few vans on carsales.com.au and there were a few on drive.com.au. Only a couple on ebay and in the trading post. Where are you located? and don't just look under other or vans... if there's a custom selection use that as well to filter your searches on the sites. Hope this helps.
thanks
